The Tomatometer score — based on the opinions of hundreds of film and television critics — is a trusted measurement of critical recommendation for millions of fans.
The Last Samurai is about the relationship between a young boy, Ludo, and his mother, Sibylla. Sibylla, a single mother, brings Ludo up somewhat unusually; he starts reading at two, reading Homer in the original Greek at three, and goes on to Hebrew, Japanese, Old Norse, Inuit, and advanced mathematics. To stand in for a male influence in his upbringing, Sibylla plays him Akira Kurosawa 's Seven Samurai , which he comes to know by heart.
The Last Samurai is a pretty solid, although underrated film. The action is well done, and the fusion of old and new, as well as the many ideologies throughout the movie are delivered in an interesting and enjoyable fashion. No Hollywood historical epic is accurate, although almost all are based on a well-known story or a particularly important period. This was a difficult period.

The Last Samurai is a American period drama war film directed and co-produced by Edward Zwick , who also co-wrote the screenplay with John Logan and Marshall Herskovitz. Tom Cruise portrays a United States Captain of the 7th Cavalry Regiment , whose personal and emotional conflicts bring him into contact with samurai warriors in the wake of the Meiji Restoration in 19th Century Japan. To a lesser extent it is also influenced by the stories of Jules Brunet , a French army captain who fought alongside Enomoto Takeaki in the earlier Boshin War and Frederick Townsend Ward , an American mercenary who helped Westernize the Chinese army by forming the Ever Victorious Army. Former US Army Captain Nathan Algren, a bitter alcoholic traumatized by the atrocities he committed during the American Indian Wars , is approached by his former commanding officer Colonel Bagley to train the newly created Imperial Japanese Army for Japanese businessman Omura, who intends to use the army to suppress a samurai-headed rebellion against Japan's new Emperor.

Standing six feet tall, Saigo Takamori—seen here in a statue from in Ueno Park, Tokyo—would not be considered an especially tall man now. But he was a giant compared with the Japanese average at that time, an effect heightened by his broad neck, square shoulders, and large, penetrating eyes with bristly eyebrows.
